1. Accommodation:
Hope all of you already have booked accommodation through Studentenwerk of your University. If still have not booked, try as soon as possible.International students get more priority for accommodation in studentenwerk.
2. Train Ticket:
Try to make your flight reservation in convenient time so that you can reach your destination in time. Here I am giving you the links deutche-bahn (Click here), so that you can manage your train ticket & timetable after landing Germany.
You have many options to buy train-ticket eg. ICE/IC/EC (Express train) & RE/RB etc (Local Transport).Probably,it will not be a wise decision to book ticket in advance (although quite cheap), as sometimes flights make some unwanted delay to reach in destination .
If you need to go for longer distance, better to use Express Train.
If you are in shorter distance & not with heavy luggage ,you can choose Local Transport.
Also, if you arrive on Saturday & Sunday, you can use Weekend ticket (Click here) that costs around 39 € for 5 person(Group ticket) in any distance.
But don’t forget that Saturday & Sunday are officially closing days in Germany. (even studentenwerk).
- In Germany you cannot spend nights in railway stations because they will be locked in the night, so you must plan you arrival in such a way that you can reach the destined place in Germany(university or your friend) before night (21:00 hours German time). Otherwise you will have to book a hotel, so eventually you will spend a large amount. You cannot stay out on roads because its freezing cold.
- Best advice will be reach in Germany at morning or atleast by afternoon (13:00 hours German time). Choose your airline keeping this in mind.
- Note: there are many types of trains, please be sure to get into the right one going to the place you want to go. If you do not know, please ask.

4. Things to do after coming to Germany :
You have noticed that your visa duration stands for 3 months. So, after coming Germany, you have to extend it depends on your study duration.
- Get the Housing Contacts from Studentenwerk/ House Owner.
- Find the address of Bürgeramt/Rathhaus nearest to your city. Check the timings of the Bürgeramt/Rathhaus(City Registration Hall). Go there with all your documents (Passport, Housing Contact etc) for registration. Fill the Anmeldung Forms. This is not the place where you can extend your VISA.
- Register at the International Student Center of your University for IMATRICULATION.
- Know the dates for all the things necessary from the International Student Center. Make a note of them & maintain strongly any appointment timing.
- Check the timings of TK, AOK (Health Insurance). Check the offers they have and then make your insurance. Then take the papers that are necessary for the VISA extension, Ask for aSocial Security Number, and also a Paper stating that your are with the insurance agency for the University. Preferably go with a senior student who can speak a little bit German.
- Go to the Bank(after fixing an appointment) and then take all your documents with you. Preferably go with a senior student who can speak a little bit German. Then deposit your demand draft into your account. Check all the possible offers before doing anything.
- Thank the student for the help at all stages and also do not forget to be helpful to the future generations.
5. VISA EXTENSION:
Go to Ausländerbehörde at first hour to get an appointment for extending your VISA. You can find the address by googling.Fill the “Visa Application form” carefully.
Don’t forget to bring with you a set of photocopy & original :
- Passport.
- University Registration/Immatriculation Paper.
- Two papers that you got from TK/AOK.
- Anmeldung (City Registration) documents .
- Housing Contact Paper.
- Bank Deposit/Scholarship Paper .
- Recent Photo.
- Visa fees.
- Anything else if you required.
6. What to Do and what not to Do:
- Once you are out of your country, you represent you country so behave properly. If you mis-behave all say “Bangladeshi mis-behave”. We are the ambassadors of our country.
- Do not talk of Nazi or Hitler once inside Germany.
- Do not get into trains/bus/tram/local trains without a valid ticket. Penalty is heavy and no arguments entertained.
- All public places like shops, bus stations, railway stations…. have CCTV monitoring. So, do not try to mis-behave or play mischief.
- If you do not know how to get the things in railway station, always ask at information desk.
- Please do say “thank-you” after any help sought.
- Please do ask in very polite way. Westerns value this utmost to form impression.
- Germany is a work oriented society, so do your work yourself and do not depend on others for anything, as most of the time all are busy with their own work.
- Same with money. Try not to depend on others. Earn your own money.
- Remember you are in a foreign country, you should be friendly and also careful in all respects where ever you are signing….
- Remember another thing: You have come here with a certain moto (mostly studying your masters / Phd), keep that always in mind. Entertainment should be a part of life and not completely take over your life as a major part during your study.
- Earning while studying should be always such that it does not effecting your studies. So, As a student you are here for “Full time study & Part time job” NOT for “Part time study, Full time job”.
- You are away from your parents and families, hence there will also be a most possibility for you to catch bad habits…which are easy to get, but difficult to go…so take strong care about yourself and self control. Keep up your traditions and customs you had and make your parents feel proud of you.
- BE GOOD AND DO GOOD: THEN EVERYTHING WILL BE GOOD. ALWAYS HELP OTHERS.
Herzlich Willkommen in Deutschland !!!
